How to make Unicorn Horn Fondant Toppers:

The basic steps below will help you create pretty fondant horns that you can use on a variety of sweets depending on the size you make them. You may need to practice a little to get the right look but the nice thing is if the horn doesn't turn out right you just ball it back up and start again!

Step 1: Take a small amount of white fondant and roll it into a ball. If you are making unicorn horns for cupcakes the ball should be about the size of nickel. I made a couple balls at a time so I always had one as a reference for size for the next horn. This way they all turn out around the same size. Next roll out the ball on a clean surface like a baking mat or piece of parchment. As you are rolling the fondant into a cylinder leave the center thicker than the 2 ends as shown in the photo above. The cylinder should be about 3.5" long with the ends being thinner than the middle. This creates the thin top of the horn.

TIP: If you are rolling them out on parchment you can draw a 3.5" line to use as a guide for rolling out your ball.

Step 2: Bring the two ends of your cylinder together so you form a teardrop shape.

Step 3: In your hands pick up your teardrop shaped fondant and carefully hold the narrow end in your left hand (if you are right handed) and give a twist on the thicker bottom part with your right hand.

Step 4: Repeat the twist...

Step 5: And repeat the twist until it resembles a unicorn horn.

Step 6: Now you have a unicorn horn fondant topper! Set the horns aside once you have as many as you need made to let firm up for a bit before painting with glamorous gold edible art paint. For a slightly softer gold you can use champagne gold edible art paint.

See how easy peasy that was!

TIP: These can be made a few days to a week or two in advance. Store in an airtight container.

To make your unicorn horn fondant toppers look truly magical the next step is to paint them! The easiest way to paint them, after a few miss tries was to punch small holes in the empty small box that the 4oz tub of fondant came. The holes should fit a toothpick. Once your fondant horns are firmed up a bit (can take an hour or two) take a toothpick and insert it into the bottom of the horn. With a paintbrush paint the horn with glamorous gold edible art paint or champagne gold edible art paint and place the toothpick in the fondant box to dry. You could also use a piece of styrofoam to hold the horns while they dry.

While your gold unicorn horns are drying your can make some cute unicorn ears! Similar starting point as the horns but you make much smaller fondant balls to start with. I made them in pairs at a time to try to be consistent. Follow the photos above or add your own spin on the shape! We used pearl white edible art paint to color the ears once they hardened up. For the centers we mixed a tiny amount of the pearl white to a drop of pastel pink edible art paint. Doing this made the pink a touch lighter and give it a shimmer. The backs of the ears are easiest to paint once you place them on the cupcake.

For the cupcakes you can make your favorite homemade recipe or jazz up some store bought ones. We chose the later as I found some delightful vanilla cupcakes that I knew I could transform with some of our unicorn rainbow Sprinklefetti sprinkle mix. I left the mini chocolate chips that came on the cupcakes and sprinkled on the pretty sprinkle mix after I added the gold unicorn horn and ears. How easy and fun is that?!
