This week we are sharing how to make Robin's nest rice crispy treat cups. We made them in our new purple tulip cupcake wrappers and small flower pots. This creates a unique presentation and would perfect for a baby shower, bridal shower or spring dessert table. Find out how to make the pretty speckled Robin's eggs in this post too!
We had leftover chocolate covered chow mein pieces from our Bird's Nest Cake Topper project and thought it might be fun to make some smaller nests to go on the spring display we are working on. Don't you love how one project can help inspire another?! We've made them even more delicious by adding cocoa rice crispy treats in the bottom of the tulip cupcake wrappers. Yum, two treats in one!
Cocoa Rice Crispy Treats Recipe
Makes approximately 12-14 treat cups
Ingredients for cocoa rice crispy treats:
6 cups of cocoa rice crispy cereal
6 tablespoons butter
1 10.5 oz bags of mini marshmallows
1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste
Other supplies-ingredients needed:
Step 1: Place each terracotta pot in one of the cavities of a cupcake baking pan.This helps to keep the pots stable while you are filing them. Put a tulip cupcake wrapper in each pot.
Step 2: In a large pot melt the butter, and then add the marshmallows. Stir constantly until the marshmallows are completely melted, then add the vanilla bean paste. Add the cereal and mix until all the cereal is completely coated.
Step 3: Using a spoon place some of the cocoa rice crispy treat mix into each of the wrapper lined pots. It will be sticky! Fill each cup and then spray your hand with a little coconut oil or baking spray then press down on the rice crispies to compact them into the pots. They are easier to press into the cups after they have cooled just a little.
Step 4: Put some chocolate frosting into a tipless piping bag and squeeze the icing to the point of the bag. Snip off about 1/2" of the tip and pipe some frosting on the top of the cocoa rice crispies. Add some chocolate covered chow mein noodles to the top to create the look of a nest. These are what really make the cocoa rice crispy cups look like a Robin's nest!
How to Make Candy Speckled Eggs
Step 1: Take the edible art paints and shake them really well before using as the paint color can settle on the bottom of the bottle. Add a small amount of each color to a small styrofoam bowl. I added the most of the pastel blue, maybe 5 drops, with a few drops of green and a couple drops of white that I mixed quickly with a paint brush. The paint doesn't have to be fully mixed and you don't need a lot of paint if you want a pretty speckled effect. Too much paint in your bowl will tend to cover the eggs and make them look less speckled. I did a couple batches and varied the amount of each color a little to get a few different looks and shades of blue and aqua eggs. The eggs used are Cadbury Mini Eggs that I happen to find on sale after Easter and they came in a bag of all white coating with white chocolate insides.
Step 2: Working quick as this kind of paint dries fast, add a 3-5 of your candy coated eggs to the bowl and lightly roll them back and forth so they roll through the paint. Stop when you get the desired look to your eggs. Take the eggs out and place them on a sheet of parchment to fully dry which doesn't take long.
Step 3: Once you have all the eggs you need add a few to the top of your Robin's nest rice crispy treat cups. If you can't find candy eggs to speckle you can use blue jelly beans and speckle the outside with a little of the paint too.
When all of your Robin's nest rice crispy treat cups are made you can add a pretty detail to the front of the flower pot to make them even more special. We used some darling felt bows by @oliveourlovehandmade. It completed the cups in such a pretty way! They coordinated to the sprinkle ball jar made by Unpolished and Pretty that we added a spring arrangement to.
