Gingerbread House Decorating Ideas

It's gingerbread house season and we've got gingerbread house decorating ideas to share with you! Our sweet design team used the Ginger Snap Reusable Gingerbread House Kit to create all of the examples shown here. The ladies were up for the challenge of transforming the plastic realistic cookie houses that snap together in no time so you can get to the fun part faster...the decorating! You can use store bought candies and other food items as well as sprinkles, fondant and chocolate. Once you are done for this season you can wash off your house and pack it away until the next time you want to decorate it.

Holiday Cheer Gingerbread House by Becca of Sweet Whimsy Shop

I LOVE gingerbread houses. As a child, one of our family’s traditions involved a visit to an annual Christmas-themed event that included a massive gingerbread house village, with hundreds of houses on display. Walking through the display was my favorite part of the event. Over the years, I’ve created (err…attempted to create) my own gingerbread houses…most of them were the size of school-lunch milk cartons, and constructed from graham crackers. One year (our first year of marriage), I made a “real” gingerbread house. It took forever, and it wasn’t exactly a culinary or architectural masterpiece. I haven’t attempted another since. I’m not great with cookies (gingerbread or otherwise), or icing, or gluing cookies together with icing. So, when Bakers Party Shop introduced a snap-together plastic gingerbread house that I could decorate with melted candy coating/chocolate, instead of royal icing, that was a game-changer! This house was inspired by the colors and characters of Doodlebug’s Christmas Town line of paper goods. The adorable happy critters and people, and the bright, festive colors of the line are very much “my style,” and similar to a lot of the cake pops I make. All of the decorations on this hosue, with the exception of the sprinkles, nonpareils, and Holiday Cheer Sprinklefetti sprinkle mix that I used for the roof, are made with candy melts. The trees, candy canes, snowflakes, holly leaves, and a few other accents, were made using silicone or plastic candy molds. The rest of the details were created by piping melted candy coating, similar to how one would pipe royal icing. This house was so fun to design and decorate, and I really appreciated the opportunity to decorate “within my comfort zone” (using candy melts), instead of tackling ingredients and techniques that aren’t within my skillset! And, I think the nontraditional ingredients used here are barely recognizable, because the house itself looks so realistic and classic. I’m pretty sure this will be my go-to for the future!

Hawaiian Holiday Gingerbread House by Lexi of My Batter Fingers

That's right everyone, a tropical gingerbread house! If there's anything out of the ordinary during the Holidays, it's warm weather. I spent all of my formative years growing up in Hawaii and Christmas was so weird the first few years we lived there. The lights are fewer and farther between, palm trees are wrapped, and most Christmas trees are fake. You don't see many garlands or Santa's in lawns or candy canes in the bushes. Christmas is simple and fun, just like this gingerbread house. I reigned in all the temptations to go crazy on the house and opted to really capture what Christmas is like in my neighborhood. Wrapped palm trees, colorful lights, and all the things everyone already loves about tropical weather in a fun, simple package. The one misrepresentation here is that no one has a thatched roof like a hut. But, I couldn't resist, it just looks so tropical! I love these reusable gingerbread houses. They're easy!! And no matter how simple or elaborate your decoration style is it will still look great. I had a blast using the sugar shapes and chocolate molds from bakers party shop to create a little scene. Maybe even more than I enjoyed pasting on Triscuits with royal icing and trying to pour nonpareils onto wet royal icing on the side of the house. I can't wait to keep using this amazing product throughout more seasons.

Snowy Winter Gingerbread House by Amanda of Eleven Fifteen Bake Co.

My gingerbread house was inspired by a trip I took to Estes Park, Colorado last year around this time. We NEVER get snow in Alabama, so seeing that little town nestled in the mountains covered in snow was dreamy. There was something peaceful about that scenery that I wanted to recreate. The hints of silver from the dragees added just the right amount of shimmer needed to give it its glow. And the wedding white Sprinklefetti sprinkle mix gave it texture and definition. This little house gives me all the snowy, dreamy feels of my getaway in the snowy Colorado mountains. 

Holiday Spirit Gingerbread House by Johneris of Rose's Mama Bakes

I was inspired by two things, first my daugther Learose, and second family tradition, and my love for Christmas. Since I can remember, my mom would always decorate the house really nicely for Christmas, from the bathroom to the balcony, kitchen bedrooms everything in the house will have that Christmas spirit, and I will dream each year waiting excited to see what she will come up with. Well everything changed when I came to NYC, and I moved by myself.  I never put up a Christmas tree, but I will still visit my family every chance I could for Christmas, and be delighted by my mom's creations (my mom is an interior designer). When my daughter Learose came to my life, I put up my first tree for her first Christmas (she was only 3 months), and from then on became a tradition. Every year I want to put my Christmas tree up and decorate my house as christmassy as possible using lot of lights, vibrant colors, sparkles, and all the holiday spirit, and that's what this house represent. The snowmen represent Learose and I, my love for her and our relationship. I also love snowmen, snow flakes and all those things, my kind of perfect day would be an snowy day of December, staying in, cuddling with my daughter drinking hot cocoa, watching movie.

Fancy Rose Gingerbread House by Amanda of A Few Cakes

I wanted to do a non traditional color theme for my house so I went with pink and royal blue. I piped my house with white royal icing and added pearls and snowflakes from the Silver snowflake Sprinklefetti sprinkle mix. I used the snowflakes on the front from the winter forest sugar toppers and the animals on the yard. I added pink and royal blue jimmies to accent the roof of the house and edible pink fondant roses on the front and yard. To finish it off I added festive fetti pink and gold confetti outside with the jimmies to tie it all together.
